Wearing dentures requires an adjustment period, especially when it comes to food. While our dental office is dedicated to making sure your dentures are the absolute best fit and highest quality possible, there are simply some foods that are difficult to eat with dentures.
WHY CAN’T I EAT CERTAIN FOODS?
God created our mouths to be incredibly powerful. Our molars (when healthy), can produce a biting force of around 200 lbs on average. This is because hard and chewy foods take an enormous amount of biting power. Since your natural teeth are securely anchored in your jaw by your roots, eating those foods are generally no problem. However, when you have dentures, some of that natural biting power goes away. Dentures provide an excellent way to restore your appearance and your ability to bite and chew, but that decrease in biting strength makes it harder to eat certain foods.
Maintaining a good bond between your dentures and your gums is essential to keeping them in good condition. Eating some foods can weaken that bond, which may cause your dentures to slip.
WHAT FOODS CAN I NOT EAT?
It’s not so much that you can’t eat these foods. However, if you have dentures, you may have some trouble eating:
Even when steak is cooked perfectly (and we won’t even get started on the debate of what the perfectly cooked steak is), it tends to be one of the chewier meats. Chewing that juicy steak may loosen your dentures, causing sores on your gums underneath your dentures. If you’re a steak lover, don’t worry. We aren’t asking you to give up your favorite foods. Making sure to cut your steak into very small pieces will make it easier to chew.
ANYTHING WITH SEEDS
How much trouble could a few seeds on crackers or bread cause? Unfortunately, a lot. When those tiny seeds slip under your dentures, they can cause significant pain. Buying unseeded varieties of foods is a simple way to avoid the problem.
Similar to seeds, popcorn hulls can become stuck under your dentures and cause pain and irritation. It’s better to opt for a different snack than endure the agony of a misplaced hull.
HARD FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
Fruits and veggies that are hard when raw can be difficult to chew, and biting into them may cause your dentures to slip. Apples, carrots, and corn on the cob are a few of the worst offenders. Slicing the corn off the cob, eating cooked carrots, and slicing apples into slivers will make it easier for you to eat them.
Peanut butter and other sticky foods can loosen your dentures. These foods also tend to stick to them, meaning you’ll have to spend more than cleaning after indulging in these snacks.
